To be completely honest, I’ve been notorious for neglecting my skin in the past. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I really started looking into proper skincare tactics and how it helps the aging process. In my head, it was always assumed that I would look like I was 16 throughout my entire life. It sounds good, doesn’t it? Over time, I’ve learned that anti-aging can be subtle. It doesn’t have to involve an extreme face-lift, leaving you with the “I’m surprised all day” look.
On March 15th, I had the pleasure of meeting with two incredible dermatologists Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera and Dr. Flor Mayoral to learn about Sculptra® Aesthetic. Sculptra® Aesthetic (injectable poly-L-lactic acid) is indicated for use in people with healthy immune systems as a single regimen for the correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles. It’s not a drastic overnight procedure, so don’t expect to go from drab to fab instantly. However, its gradual process leaves the overall appearance looking natural and lasts up to two years.* The primary ingredient in Sculptra Aesthetic is biocompatible and biodegradable, made from a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid (which is naturally absorbed by the body).
Essentially, the doctors explained that it works to help restore collagen that we lose with the aging process. Therefore, the skin’s architecture is reinforced and gives a refined, more youthful-looking appearance by restoring shallow areas or deep wrinkles that deplete over time. This is a different treatment approach than what a patient gets with neurotoxins or HA fillers. It has also been shown to last up to* two years. Dr. Aguilera and Dr. Mayoral, two of the top Dermatologists in South Florida, believe in this treatment approach and offer it to their patients nearly every day!
*Clinical study ended after 25 months.

Important Safety Information
Aesthetic (injectable poly-L-lactic acid) is indicated for use in people with healthy immune systems as a single regimen for the correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles in which deep dermal grid pattern (cross-hatch) injection technique is appropriate.
Sculptra Aesthetic should not be used by people that are allergic to any ingredient of the product or have a history of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring. Safety has not been established in patients who are pregnant, lactating, breastfeeding, or under 18 years of age.
Sculptra Aesthetic has unique injection requirements and should only be used by a trained physician. Contour deficiencies should not be overcorrected because they are expected to gradually improve after treatment.

Use at the site of skin sores, cysts, pimples, rashes, hives or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. Sculptra Aesthetic should not be injected into the red area (vermillion) of the lip or in the peri-orbital area.
The most common side effects after initial treatment include injection site swelling, tenderness, redness, pain, bruising, bleeding, itching and lumps. Other side effects may include small lumps under the skin that are sometimes noticeable when pressing on the treated area. Larger lumps, some with delayed onset with or without inflammation or skin discoloration, have also been reported.
